HP and Green – How The Two Can Go Hand in Hand

Everybody’s doing it, so why not? If things go well, then everybody will see how important it is to follow this trend. Hewlett-Packard recently announced their latest versions of printers: the HP LaserJet P2055dn and the HP LaserJet P2055n. These are monochrome printers that offer new solutions for a world with a stressed environment.

These printers reduce how much paper and energy is used on average. More people everywhere are asking, and even demanding, that products and services be “green”. Lots of companies have decided that they, too, need to be green. HP is among them. Because there were delays in removing hazardous parts of their laptops, Greenpeace started protests against them not all that long ago, in July 2009. HP realized that they should be doing things differently, so they did what they could and managed to rank as the greenest Fortune 500 company. Talk about a change in strategy!

The HP LaserJet P2055 printers are qualified to use the Energy Star label. They mainly focus on medium sized and smaller businesses, and they aim to maintain a minimum of 35 pages per minute for their printers’ speeds. The new technology used in both of these new printers reduces energy use by up to 50% when compared to more traditional technology, according to HP.

These two printers can print on both sides of one paper easily, and they are designed to be used with completely recycled paper. Both printers are designed to print 35 pages in one minute with 1200 dots in each inch printed. They also provide an LCD display of two inches by 16 inches.

The Hewlett-Packard Eco Solutions Print Console will help administrators manage the printer’s settings with regard to energy and paper savings straight from a personal computer. Also, they have a Carbon Footprint Calculator designed to assist users in reducing their carbon footprint during the printing process. These printers are expected to be reasonably priced, despite the assortnent of new technology and tools.

Hewlett-Packard also announced that they will be using recycled plastic to make their HP ink cartridges. Lots and lots of very small ink cartridges can still become very detrimental to the environment. For this company, the plan was to use ten million pounds of recycled material. This plastic is recycled from bottles and other plastic goods.

HP has committed to reducing their energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions by at least 25 percent between the years 2005 and 2010. Helping the environment by lowering emissions and reducing wastes must begin with R&D, according to HP. They say that cleaner, better ways of doing business have to be found first. The technology industry, and all the industries tied to it, have had an enormous impact on the environment. They need to simply take responsibility for what happened, especially now that it has become known. It seems as though HP is doing exactly that by starting a bunch of green programs.

Back in 1997, the company laid claim to being the first computer manufacturer to start recycling operations in house. They had a goal of recycling over 1 billion pounds of products and materials in the year 2007 – and they reached that goal. Now HP provides several options for its customers such as returning, recycling, donating, and trading in used components.
