How To Turn A Hobby Into A Business

Many people who practice a craft as a hobby want to turn their hobby into their business. The problem is, it is very hard to compete in a marketplace that includes handcrafted items from overseas that can be sold cheaply. In order to make a viable business model, the craftsman has to find a unique niche.

Woodworking is a good example of how this can be done. There are many amateur woodworkers and the manufacturers of woodworking machinery have come up with some fantastic products that allow enthusiasts to get professional results even if they have limited space to work in. Between the high quality saws, routers, lathes and other equipment that is available, items like wooden bar stools and other goods are easily produced.

As great as these machines are, they still can’t compete with the far more expensive machines that can mass produce wood bar stools, chairs, tables and other wooden products. It would be completely unrealistic to think that you could make a living trying to compete with companies that can make a hundred stools in the time it takes you to make five or ten at most.

If you want to make a living at woodworking, you’re going to have to be creative and carve out a unique niche for yourself. The only way you’re going to be able to do that is to turn your craft into an art form and market it as such. If you can create unusual designs that include the true craftsman’s touch, you may find that you will be in demand by interior designers, architects and even upmarket galleries.

These upmarket designers and galleries are always on the lookout for unique furniture. Even the finest modern bar stools, for instance, are mass produced and so won’t help them establish a reputation with a clientele that demands only the best and most unique furniture available.

If you want to turn your hobby into a profession, you are going to have to become the best woodworker you can be. You will need to perfect both your practical skills and your creative skills. While these have always been your goal, if you decide you want to go into business, you’re going to have to push the envelope even further.

After you have made some items you’re happy with, you will have a portfolio. Now what you have to do is promote your business. A website is a good idea, but you will also have to get out there and show your work to potential clients in person.

It’s never easy for entrepreneurs, especially at first. If you dig in your heels and never give up, though, eventually you may find that you will be able to say goodbye to your nine to five job and turn your hobby into your profession.
